Feed your brain, exercise your mind

Young woman and a healthy diet concept

According to Yian Gu, a Columbia University assistant professor of neuro-psychology, eating the right foods can postpone brain aging. A recent study showed that adults age 65 and older who ate at least five foods from a Mediterranean type diet (such as fish, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes and olive oil) and consumed moderate amounts of wine and low amounts of dairy, meat and poultry, had larger brain volumes that those who didn’t eat this way. It is believed that the Mediterranean diet helps slow the loss of brain cells during aging.

Cynthia Green, a clinical psychologist and director of the Memory Enhancement Program at the Mount Sinai Medical School, suggested the following ways to keep the brain healthy:

  1. Get enough aerobic exercise – at least 150 minutes per week.
  2. Maintain a healthy body weight
  3. Not smoking
  4. Eating a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables
  5. Engaging in activities that exercise the brain, including games.

Green also said that meditating for about 30 minutes a day improves cognitive function, sensory processing, and mental focus. Benefits have even been seen in people with early stages of Alzheimer’s.
