Heart Disease? Eat Pizza!

by Hon Lee on July 16, 2014

Not the kind loaded down with fat, sugar and salt that’s lacking in fiber and nutrients, but the homemade kind with selected ingredients that can be good for your heart. According to an interview in Bottom Line with John la Puma, MD, who has a nutritional medical practice, you can use the following ingredients:

  1. Full-Fat Cheese –– as long as you don’t eat too much. Saturated fat can improve your HDL (good cholesterol) and may reduce triglyceride levels.
  2. Tomatoes –– contain lycopene which, along with beta-carotene, other carotenoids, has been linked to lower rates of heart disease and cancer.
  3. White Anchovies – they are high in omega-3s, but low in mercury.
  4. Onion, Garlic & Chile Peppers –- have anti-inflammatory compounds that protect the arteries and reduce the risk of heart disease.
  5. Arugula—is a cruciferous veggie like broccoli and Brussels spouts that lowers inflammation; it’s also a detoxifying agent.
  6. Other ingredients – beets (lowers blood pressure), avocado (has heart-healthy monounsaturated fats), walnuts and almonds (has plant sterols that prevent absorption of cholesterol), and dried herbs and spices, e.g., oregano, sumac, cumin, rosemary, basil, thyme and pepper (have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties).
