Joint pain or swelling? This common food can help.

Shoulder pain

Do you suffer from joint pain or swelling? This is a sign of inflammation. Inflammation can cause or be the result of conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. According to Michael Murray, a naturopathic physician, eating a quarter-inch slice of raw, fresh ginger a day, can help relieve pain.

Murray says that fresh ginger is a potent inhibitor of prostaglandin and tromboxanes, inflammatory compounds that are involved in arthritis. Foods to avoid include refined carbohydrates that spike blood sugar and lead to inflammation. I personally prefer pickled ginger, like the kind you eat with sushi. People who have signs of too much stomach heat (sore gums, mouth blisters, tongue ulcers) should be cautious about eating ginger.
