Motion is Lotion, Movement is Medicine

by Hon Lee on July 30, 2014

“Motion is lotion, movement is medicine.” So says Dr. Mike Evans, a physician and an associate professor at the University of Toronto. He has a popular YouTube series called “Whiteboard Med School,” and explains common health problems in an engaging manner using cartoons drawn on a whiteboard.

Low Back Pain

In his presentation on low back pain, a condition that affects 80 percent of us at some point in our lives, Dr. Evans says that how well we’re are able to recover from low back pain greatly depends on our mindset and how we handle stress. Unless we’re seriously injured and can’t move, he says we’ll recover faster if we have a positive outlook and can stay active. If we’re fearful whenever we experience a twinge of pain and just sit around, it’ll often make our condition worse. Please check out his YouTube videos by clicking on this link.

In Chinese medicine we know that our minds can change our physiology. That’s why I recommend practicing qigong as a way to quiet our minds, calm our fears and strengthen our bodies.
