Too much of one flavor can hurt you!

by Hon Lee on June 10, 2014

In Chinese medicine, we group foods under five primary flavors: sour, salty, bitter, sweet, and pungent. We believe eating a variety of foods with a balance of  flavors is the most healthful, and that eating too much of any one flavor can be harmful.  For example, eating too many sour foods will not only damage the liver, but will also cause the liver to overtax the spleen and pancreas, resulting in digestive issues. Eating too many salty foods damages the kidneys and weaken your bones. Too much sweet or bitter flavors will overload your spleen and pancreas. And too many pungent/spicy foods can dry up your body fluids.
