What’s the best fish for your health?

Most people assume that eating fish is good for you because fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps decrease inflammation that contributes to cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and asthma. But which kinds of fish should we eat? According to Dr. Wendy Kohatsu, an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at UCSF, we should eat oily fish. As a guide, we can use the acronym SMASH: salmon (wild), mackerel (Spanish, not king, which has higher mercury levels, anchovies, sardines, and herring. Dr. Kohatsu recommends eating three ounces twice a week.

What types of fish should we avoid?  She says that shark, swordfish, golden bass, king mackerel and albacore tuna can be high in mercury and should be avoided. She adds that if you eat tuna, choose the “light” version which has less mercury than albacore.
